An extremely powerful WordPress anti-spam plugin that eliminates blog comment spam, including trackback and pingback spam. Finally, you can enjoy a spam-free WordPress blog! Includes spam-free contact form feature as well.
A Powerful Weapon Against Comment Spam

Comment spam has been a huge problem for bloggers since the inception of blogs, and it just doesn’t seem to go away. The worst kind, and most prolific, is automated spam that comes from bots. Well, finally there is an anti-spam plugin for WordPress that provides an effective solution, without CAPTCHA’s, challenge questions, or other inconvenience to site visitors. WP-SpamFree eliminates automated blog comment spam from bots, including trackback and pingback spam.

New Features

* Now with Enhanced Comment Blacklist option! Instead of just sending comments to moderation as with WordPress’s default Comment Blacklist functionality, with this turned on, anything that matchs a string in the blacklist will be completely blocked. Also adds a link in the comment notification emails that will let you blacklist a commenter’s IP with one click.
* See what’s been blocked! Version 2.0 adds “Blocked Comment Logging Mode”, a temporary diagnostic mode that logs blocked comments and contact form submissions for 7 days, then turns off automatically. If you want to see what’s been blocked, or verify that everything is working, turn this on and see what WP-SpamFree is protecting your blog from.
* Added option for smaller graphic counters to display spam stats, in addition to the existing normal-sized ones.
* Added Widget for displaying spam counter. Shows small counter #1. Now you can show stats without knowing any code.

Key Features

1. Virtually eliminates automated comment spam from bots. It works like a firewall to ensure that your commenters are in fact, human.
2. A counter on your dashboard to keep track of all the spam it’s blocking. The numbers will show how effective this plugin is.
3. No CAPTCHA’s, challenge questions or other inconvenience to site visitors – it works silently in the background.
4. Includes drop-in spam-free contact form. Easy to use – no configuration necessary.
5. No false positives, which leads to fewer frustrated readers, and less work for you.
6. You won’t have to waste valuable time sifting through a spam queue anymore, because there won’t be much there, if anything.
7. Powerful trackback and pingback spam protection.
8. Easy to install – truly plug and play. Just upload and activate. (Installation Status on the plugin admin page to let you know if plugin is installed correctly.)
9. The beauty of this plugin is the methods of blocking spam. It takes a different approach than most and stops spam at the door.
10. The code has an extremely low bandwidth overhead and won’t slow down your blog (very light database access), unlike some other anti-spam plugins.
11. Completely compatible with all cache plugins, including WP Cache and WP Super Cache. Not all anti-spam plugins can say that.
12. Display your blocked spam stats on your blog.
13. Helps keep your database slimmer and more efficient.

4) NoSpamNX

Plugin Link : http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/nospamnx/

Author: Sven Kubiak

Most Antispam Plugins focus on user interaction, e.g. captcha or Math calculations to defend you against automated comment spambots. Some use JavaScript and/or Sessions, check each comment against common spam phrases or modify your comment template. NoSpamNX intend to handle automated comment-spam without these measures. It does not require JavaScript, Cookies or Sessions. It does not change your comment template in any way, given you full compatibility with other WordPress- or Browser Plugins.

NoSpamNX automaticly adds additional formfields to your comment form, invisible to the users. If a spambot fills these fields blindly (which 99.9% of all spambots do), the comment will not be saved. You can decide if you want to block these spambots, mark them as spam or put them in moderation queue. Furthermore, you can put common spam-phrases on a blacklist.

The user must no longer fill out any additional fields in the comment form, and you can focus on blogging and your readers comments!

Since Version 2.6 NoSpmaNX can use the same mechanics to protect your Registration and Login Form against automated access.
Requirements

Make sure your theme loads wp_head and comment_form according to the WordPress Codex (see http://is.gd/1lezf), otherwise NoSpamNX will not work properly!
Features in a nutshell

* Easy installation (just activate the plugin)
* Does not require any modification on your comment template
* Does not change any of your comment formfields (giving you more compatibility with other plugins and templates)
* Does not require JavaScript, Cookies or Sessions
* Does not require any extra field for user input (e.g. Captcha)
* No need to manage spambot comments anymore (if you don’t want to)
* Compatible with comments-popup
* Compatible with WordPress MU
* False-positives are nearly impossible
* NEW: Protect your Registration and Login Form against automated access (since 2.6)

The first thing to have is to block spam before it enters your inbox. The only risk to this practice is that any email rejected by your spam software will be lost for good. However, sometimes antispam software wrongAnd consider to be a legitimate email as spam. First solution to dry up the spam at the source, set up SpamPal. This software will Prevent your solution (Outlook, Outlook Express or Thunderbird) to download the spam, Which will save you time to sort the mail left.

This type of spam filter is effective Particularly in the case of a mailbox heavily spammedFor Which the time spent sorting and deleting spam becomes a problem. Ultimately, the user will not mind one or two good messages deleted by accident a few thousand well understood. Alternatively, methods of logical analysis of the spam, using software like SpamBayes working on the source of the e-mail to Detect Whether or not it is spam. Advantage of this technique: the filter is sometimes more intelligent, since it will be able to detect if you tell him several times to type emails casino spam, any content of this type should be redirected to your Deleted Items.

If you delete all content in foreign languages, it will adopt the same attitude to handle spam … Moreover, it is important to Ensure that its anti-spam solution has advanced functions overlap to detect spam The message contains links to external relatively unsafe formatted text, the sender is attached to a nonexistent domain name makes heavy use of certain HTML tags … All of which allow you to automate much of the processing of spam.

Advertising Some companies engaged in legal business, advertise their products or services using spam. They can carry out its own newsletter, but more often ordered her to those companies (or individuals) who specialize in this. The attractiveness of such advertising is its relatively low cost and (presumably) a large scope of potential customers. Such unsolicited advertising may have the opposite effect, causing rejection of the recipients, and may even become synonymous with intrusive advertising, as happened with ham SPAM. In connection with the sharp rejection of the spam recipients, and the tightening of legislation antispamovogo share of legal goods and services in the total volume of spam is decreasing. It is believed that, with proper organization of promotional mailings, they can actually increase sales, not delivered to the recipient of special concern.

The principal terms of mutual benefit to the recipient and the organizer of distribution are: combining the roles of organizer and dispatches e-mail service provider; improving the quality of the target audience of each specific distribution of advertising messages; warning customers of the provider that he would send out promotional messages; providing convenient means to block unwanted messages. It should be noted, however, that the advertising message distributed to users with their consent, by definition, are not spam. Advertising illegal products With the help of spam frequently advertised products, which can not communicate in other ways – such as pornography, counterfeit (fake) products, medicines with the restrictions on traffic in illegally obtained private information (databases), infringing software. Nigerian letter Sometimes spam is used to enticed out money from the recipient of the letter.

The most common method is called «Nigerian letter», because a large number of these letters came from Nigeria. This letter contains a message that the recipient of the letter can be in any way a large sum of money, but the sender could help him in this. Then, the sender of the letter asked him to transfer some money under the guise of, for example, documentation or open an account. Vymanivanie this amount is the object of the bully. A narrower called this type of fraud – Bench or benches 419 (number of articles in the Criminal Code of Nigeria). Phishing «Phishing» (engl. phishing from fishing – fishing) – another way of fraud through spam. It is an attempt by spammers enticed out of the recipient’s letter of credit card numbers or passwords access to online payments. This letter is usually masked by an official communication from the administration of the bank.

It states that the recipient must confirm details about yourself, or else his account will be blocked, and provides the address map (of spammers) to the form to be filled. Among the data that is required to report are present and those that need fraudsters. To ensure that the victim does not have guessed about the deception, clearing the site also simulates the design of the official site of the bank. Other types of spam Letters of happiness The proliferation of political advocacy. Mass mailing list for the withdrawal of the postal system (DoS-attack). Mass mailing on behalf of another person in order to cause a negative attitude to it.

Mass mailing of letters containing a computer virus (for primary distribution). Our letters of Family History (as a rule, the sick, or victims of the accident the child) with the information that for every forward letters to some Internet service provider allegedly paid to the family of the victim a sum of money «treatment». The purpose of this list is to collect e-mail addresses: after numerous peresylok «all friends» in the text of the letter often contains the e-mail addresses of all whom it has been forwarded previously. And among the regular recipients may be initiated and its spammer. There are also two types of mass mailings, which are usually not included in the category of spam, because they operate unconsciously. However, they pose the same (or even more serious) problem for network administrators and end users.

Malicious programs a certain type (e-mail worms) are distributed via email. Infect another computer, the worm scans the computer to search for e-mail addresses and sends itself to those addresses. Some antivirus programs and spam filters, receiving contaminated letter sent to the return address of a notification of the virus (while mailing worms often substitutes as a return address randomly selected). As a result, dozens of people, not related to the dispatch, receiving reports that their computers are infected. However, this behavior may occur only with very old programs – were released before the problem of spam on the Internet rose to his full height

Ideology It is clear that spam brings economic benefits to its customers. This means that users, despite the dislike of spam, does enjoy the services advertised through spam. Until the impact of spam exceeds the cost of overcoming protection, spam will not disappear. Thus, the surest way to fight a denial of service advertised through spam. There are proposals on the use of public condemnation, until the end of communication, against those who buy spam advertised goods and services. Other methods are aimed at inhibiting the spammers access to users. Preventive measures to protect The surest way to fight spam – do not let spammers get e-mail address. This is a difficult task, but some precautions can be taken. Do not publish your email address

on public websites. If for some reason the email account to publish, it can be coded like «u_s_e_r_ (a) _d_o_m_a_i_n_._n_e_t». Spammers use special programs to scan websites and collect email addresses, so even a masking addresses can help. It should be remembered, however, that in the simplest cases «encoded» will be able to recognize and address of the program. In addition, it is an inconvenience not only for spammers, but also for ordinary users.

Many services to provide addresses for non-registered users can send a message to the nick. The real address is substituted service of a user profile and not visible to other users. Address can be represented in the form of pictures. There are online services that make it automatically , you can also do it in a graphics editor , or simply write the email address of your hands and take pictures. On the web-pages, e-mail addresses can be protected with the help of Java Script, which is not recognized by the software to collect e-mail addresses.

There is no need to without full guarantees of non-register at the web sites. You can make a special box for these cases and do not use it for regular work. There are even services, issuing disposable addresses specifically to identify them in case of doubt. The most famous of them – mailinator.com. Never respond to spam or pass on the reference therein. Such action will confirm that the e-mail address is actively used and would increase the amount of spam.

By downloading the images included in the letter, when read, can be used to test the activity of postal address. It is therefore recommended that they request a mail client for permission to prohibit the effect of loading the image, if you are unsure of the sender. When choosing an e-mail address should, if possible, stay in a long and uncomfortable for guessing the name. Thus, there is less than 12 million names, consisting of no more than 5 Latin letters. Even if you add numbers and symbols underlined, the number of nicknames, less than 70 million.

The spammers can send mails to all such names and weed out those with whom he came to answer «recipient does not exist». Thus, it is desirable that the name was not shorter than 6 characters, and if there are no numbers – not shorter than 7 characters. It is also desirable that the name was not a word in any language, including common names, as well as recorded in Latin Russian words. In this case the address can be guessed by the crowding of words and combinations of the dictionary.

You may from time to time change its address, but this is due to the obvious difficulty: you need to communicate the new address to people who would like to receive e-mails. Companies often do not publish your address, instead of using CGI to communicate with users. All methods of hiding the address is a fundamental flaw: they create an inconvenience, not only the alleged spammers, but the real addressees. Besides, often just need to publish the address – for example, if a contact address.

Communication over the network with advertisements (advertised address removed) Sometimes spam distribution network via the built-in Microsoft Windows SMB-service Messenger. These messages appear as pop-ups (unless a third-party software, manufacturing them in other ways). In this case, to turn off their admission may be, for example, to stop the Messenger service using net stop messenger [12]. In versions of Windows NT, beginning with Windows XP SP2, this service has already stopped by default, so this method of distribution are less likely to occur. SMS-messages Spam can be spread not only through the Internet. Advertising messages sent to mobile phones via SMS-messages, especially the unpleasant fact that they are difficult to defend. Collect email addresses Spammers find out the email addresses of users in

different ways. Some of them are: Address mailbox user posted on the public site – mostly in the guest book, forum, personal card, etc., where it can find a special program (harvester), Scanning indexing sites such as search engine robots. If the address of the mailbox is not unique word, for example, common name, it may be chosen for the dictionary. Do spammers have special dictionaries that include common words, names of people, place names and some of the most popular combination of network slang. Combining this dictionary and a list of domain names (open public), a spammer gets a list of addresses for mailing.

If you are a person with whom the owner of this correspondence box was infected with a Trojan program, all the addresses from its address book can get to a spammer. The database of customers a company could be stolen or even sold by the company spammers. Harmful Mass mailing of spam is low cost to the sender for a message. However, a huge number of useless messages cause obvious harm to the recipients. The first refers to the time spent wasted on unnecessary screening mail and vyiskivanii among its individual letters to the right. Very often the Internet traffic is very expensive, and you have to pay for apparently unnecessary emails.

It is believed that the spam could be beneficial for providers, as well as lead to increased traffic. In fact, providers also have additional costs due to increasing the useless burden on the channels and equipment. It is the providers have to spend resources on redundant hardware and the system of protection against spam. According to publicly available statistics , at least 80% of chain letters is currently spam (according to some research on a web user now account for 70 spamovyh messages per day ). Most of its mail servers shall be shut off during the reception. But even the remaining small part is sufficient to aggravate the lives of users.

Providers bear additional costs because of the constant need to fight spammers (excess equipment, excess capacity channels, a special software for spam). Spam is also harms the reputation of adherents of this method of marketing. A simulation of the spam mailing can be used to discredit the good (which it is advertised) and / or carrier, with which it addresses (supposedly or really) done, that is, spam can be used in unfair competition and «black» PR

Other methods The general tightening of the requirements for letters and senders, for example – refusing to accept letters with the wrong return address (letters from non-existent domain), check the domain name to IP-address, which is a letter, etc. Through these measures eliminated only most primitive spam – a small number of messages. However, it is not zero, so the meaning of their use remains. Sort the letters on the contents of the letter header fields allows to get rid of a certain amount of spam. Some clients (eg, Mozilla Thunderbird or The Bat!) Provide an opportunity to examine the headers without downloading from the server all the email as well, and thus save bandwidth. System type «a challenge-response» to verify that the sender – the person, not the robot software.

Using this method requires the sender of the fulfillment of certain additional actions, often it may be desirable. Many such systems pose an additional burden on the postal system, in many cases, they send requests to fake addresses, it is in professional circles, such decisions are not respected. In addition, the system can not distinguish a robot spammers from any other, for example those that send news. Systems to measure signs of mass communication, such as Razor and Distributed Checksum Clearinghouse. Built-in mail server software modules count checksums of each passing through them and check their email on the servers of Razor, or DCC, which reported the number of appearances letter on the Internet.

If a letter appears, for example, tens of thousands of times – perhaps this is spam. On the other hand, mass communication can be a legitimate mailing list. In addition, spammers can vary the text message, for example, by adding at the end of random characters. Legal aspects of the problem In some countries, legislative action against spammers. Attempts by outlawing or limiting the activities of spammers face a number of difficulties. Is not easy to define in law what is a legitimate mailing list, and what not. Worst of all, that the company (or person), spammers can be located in another country. To ensure that such laws were effective, it is necessary to develop a coherent legislation, which would be operated in most countries, which seems elusive for the foreseeable future.

In Russia, spam is prohibited by «the Law on Advertising» (Article 18, Clause 1) The proliferation of advertising on the networks of telecommunications, including through the use of telephone, facsimile, mobile radio communication is permitted only with prior consent of the caller or recipient to receive advertising. At the same time recognizes the widespread advertising without the prior consent of the caller or recipient, if reklamorasprostranitel not prove that such consent was obtained. In formal comments, the Federal Antimonopoly Service, entrusted with the responsibilities for monitoring compliance with this Act, referred to the applicability of the rule for Internet delivery.

For violation of Article 18 reklamorasprostranitel is responsible under the law on Administrative Violations. However, FAS has no authority to carry out operational search activities of the person responsible for the spam, and authorized to do so their bodies can not hold in the absence of the Russian administrative and criminal law responsibility for the delivery of spam. Therefore, despite the periodic publication of materials to bring the perpetrators to justice [21], currently, the legislative rule ineffective. From 1 January 2004 in the U.S. the federal law, known as the Can-Spam Act. Attempts to bring spammers to court, and sometimes these attempts are successful.

American Robert Solouey lost to the process in federal court against a small company oklahomskoy provider of Internet services, the operator which has accused him of sending spam. The sentence the court included damages of $ 10 075 000 . The first case, when the user has won a case against a company involved in the visual occurred in December 2005, when businessman Nigel Roberts from the island of Alderney (Channel Islands) has won court against Media Logistics UK, receiving as compensation for 270 £

Black lists Ownership, use, efficiency These include: lists of IP-addresses of computers that are known to them being spam. (widely used) lists of computers that can be used for distribution – «relei open» and «open proxy», and also – lists «dial» – client addresses to which there can be no mail servers (possible use), a local list or the list maintained by someone else. (widely distributed through the simplicity of implementation), black lists, a request that is carried out via DNS. They are called DNSBL (DNS B lack L ist).

Currently this method is not very efficient. Spammers find new computers to their goals faster than they manage to enter in the black lists. In addition, several computers, send spam, can compromise the entire email, domain, or subnet, and thousands of law-abiding users for an indefinite period will be denied the opportunity to send e-mail servers, using a black list. (found) lists rather preach radical theory (eg, equating to a viral malicious spam messages, etc.). Misuse Often, the irresponsible and improper use of black lists of administrators of resources, leading to blockage of the large number of innocent users. Example: the use of lists with accurate representations of what the address and how it incorporated the use of email black lists for web-resources, etc.

The irresponsible use of Example: the failure of a user (or administrator) blocked addresses on the list (because they are there a great many), or rukovodstvovanie in their actions the principle of presumption of guilt. Example: (the most striking example of the irresponsible attitude last time), the blocking of domain registrar GoDaddy thousands of domain names registered by the hosting company Majordomo [17], based on single and unverified complaints from a group Spamhaus [18] [19]. Racket on the part of administrators blacklists Recently, the network appears more and more complaints against administrators blacklists which blackmailed Internet providers and hosting providers failure to remove IP addresses from which spam was once perhaps was sent (the addresses are in the black lists of anonymous complaints that are often impossible to verify) . In addition, many require “donations” from the owners of IP addresses for the removal of records from the blacklists.

Authorization Server Have been proposed various methods to confirm that the computer that sends the message, actually has the right to do so (Sender ID, SPF, Caller ID, Yahoo DomainKeys, MessageLevel [1]), but they are not yet widely available. In addition, these technologies limit the functionality of some common types of mail servers: becomes impossible to automatically redirect your mail from one mailbox to another server (SMTP Forwarding). Among the providers of extended policy, under which customers are allowed to install SMTP-connection with server. In this case, becomes impossible to use some of the mechanisms of authentication.

Gray lists The method of gray lists based on the fact that «behavior» software designed to send spam, different from that of an ordinary e-mail servers, namely, spam programs are not trying to re-send the letter in the event of a temporary error, as required by the protocol SMTP. More precisely, an attempt to circumvent the protection, in subsequent attempts, they use a different relay, another return address, etc., so it looks for the host as part of attempts to send different messages.

The simplest version of the gray lists works as follows. All previously unknown SMTP-servers rely in a «gray» list. Mail from such servers is not accepted, nor rejected entirely – he returns a temporary error code ( «come later»). If the server-sender repeats its attempt to at least some time tg (this time called the delay), the server is entered in the whitelist, and the mail was adopted. Therefore, standard mail (not spam) are not lost, just delayed delivery (they remain in the queue at the sender’s server and delivered after one or more unsuccessful attempts). Program-spammers, or do not know how to re-send messages or use their servers will actually delay time to get on blacklists DNSBL. This method currently allows the filter to 90% of spam with virtually no risk of losing important messages. However, it also was not perfect. May mistakenly filter out messages from servers who do not meet the recommendations of the protocol SMTP, for example, the distribution of news sites. Servers with this behavior, if possible, be recorded in the whitelists.

Delay in delivery of the letter can be as high as half (or even more), which may be unacceptable in the case of urgent correspondence. This disadvantage is offset by the fact that the delay is introduced only when making the first letter from a previously unknown sender. Also, many of the implementation of gray lists automatically after a period of «friendship», making a SMTP-server in the whitelist. There are ways of sharing such mezhservernogo white lists. As a result, after an initial period «remember», in fact, been delayed less than 20% of the letters.

Major postal services using multiple servers with different IP-addresses, moreover, possible that a few servers in turn are trying to send the same message. This can lead to great delays in the delivery of letters. Pools of servers such behavior is also possible to put in the white lists. Spam programs can be improved. Support for re-sending the message is implemented fairly easily and in large part нивелирует this kind of protection. A key figure in this struggle is the ratio of the characteristic time getting to the spammer blacklists tb and a typical time-delay «gray» lists tg. When the gray list of potentially futile, with formidable gray lists for spammers.

As you may know there is a lot of discussion going on out there regarding blog comment spam. In my opinion comment spam can be defined as a comment posted to a blog wich is not related with the content of your post. It will include a link in the comments field or in the name of the author to a commercial website. The problem is becoming serious as spammers are developing bots that can make dozens of post in an hour. We must stop this now or we´ll be the third spam generation victims after mail boxes and guestbooks.

Blog comment spam can´t be comprared yet with his big brother “email” but there is enough presence to be considered as a danger. MT doesn´t help too much cleaning your articles from spamming post so if you don´t want to spend an hour each day doing blog cleaning I recommend you to take action right now. They use bots to kill your blog but you don´t have a cleaning bot, remewmber this!. We must hit asap before this becomes a major problem. Some blacklists are ready to use and other methods are a good starting point. I have collected here some methods and solutions that blog owner are developing. I´ll add a brief description of each method and a link to the author´s website where you ca find more info. I don´t want to infright copyrighted material so you must get the original content from the authore´s website.

Spam prevention is easy, some quick solutions can save your Movable Type blog from the spam plague. All the solutions I have posted here are specific for MT, I´ll try to add stuff for other blog types, sorry!. With one of this methods you can avoid most of blog spamm comments, and is very simple in case of bots, let´s go!

Email spamming is much easier than blog spamming, this is our first advantage. If a spammer wants to get an email in your inbox, he only needs your email address but if a spammer wants to get inside your blog he needs some extra effort: visit your blog and find the comment script page, then submit a post. As they use bots specifically designed for base MT installations we must change this structure as much a possible in order to increase the difficult of posting.

I recommend you to start with the easiest ones, and if they don’t keep the spammers away then try to add the advanced solutions, the reward worth the effort, so take action.

Spam folder in the mail client Mail: E-mail The largest flow of spam is distributed via electronic mail (e-mail). Currently, the proportion of viruses and spam in general traffic, e-mail is on an estimated 70 to 95 percent . As spam is most frequent advertising unpopular products: rolex, viagra, etc. . Spammers collect e-mail addresses by using a special robot, or manually (rarely), using a web page, conference Usenet, mailing lists, electronic bulletin boards, guest books, chat rooms … This robot software is able to collect thousands of addresses per hour and create one database for further distribution by them as spam. Some companies only deal with the collection of addresses, a database and then sell. Some companies sell spammers e-mail addresses of their customers, they

have ordered goods or services via e-mail. There is another way to get a long list of e-mail addresses: the addresses are generated by first randomly on specified patterns (from thousands to a million), and then just checked the special program-validator on their validity (existence). To send spam is used connected to the Internet not protected or properly configured computers. These may include: Servers that are in error are such that allow free mail forwarding (open relay, open proxy). Webmail services that allow anonymous access, or access to a simple registration of new users (who can perform special robot software). Computer-zombies.

Some spammers are using known vulnerabilities in software or computer viruses in order to capture the management of a large number of computers connected to the Internet, and use them to send spam. Mail servers that send Bounce-message when it is not possible to deliver a letter. Spammers send a letter to the obviously non-existent address, indicating a forged sender address (the one on which you want to get spam). The server creates an email with the error message and sends it to the specified address, often placing it and the text of the original letter. It should be noted that such behavior is the server with the standards adopted by the Internet, in fact, in some cases, it is the only way to notify the sender of the problem (for example, when sending messages through several consecutive servers), however, the guide for system administrators often makes recommendations to configure mail server in such a way that when you try to deliver a letter to an unused address of the server instead of creating an error message would have tore the compound.

Use different kinds of vulnerabilities and not obvious wrong (or conservative) setting mail servers for unauthorized distribution SPAM. For the difficulty of automatic filtering of spam messages are often distorted – the letters are used instead of similar style numbers, letters – instead of the Russians, in random places added gaps. We use other techniques. There are various tricks to make sure that the message received and read. Among them: Request for confirmation of delivery. Some mail clients can send it automatically. Letters that contain images that are downloaded from sites controlled by spammers. Links to web pages that are invited to learn more. Proposal to unsubscribe to this mailing list by sending a letter to the specified address (in fact, delivery is usually not terminated). If spammers get confirmation that the email address actually being used, then the flow of spam could be increased many times over. Usenet Many newsgroups Usenet, especially nemoderiruemye were abandoned by users, and now contains almost exclusively advertising, often not even on topic. Instead, others were created moderated conference. Instant Messaging With the development of the delivery of instant messages, spammers have been using them for their purposes.

Many of these services provide a list of users that can be used to send spam. A narrower called this type of spam – sleep (SP am + I nstant M essenger). Blogs, wikis, forums, message boards In recent years become popular Web sites where you can leave comments (such as forums and blogs), or those that can be freely edited – wiki. As these pages open for the free editing, they can be posted Spam – splogi. Such spam is all the more irritating that its difficult to remove (as a rule, messages in the forums and blogs can edit only the privileged users – consequently, a private party should communicate with anyone of them). Another kind of spam in blogs is a universal, often – automatic, introducing users to the list of «friends», without getting acquainted with their personal pages, as a rule, in order to artificially raise their rank by obtaining «Mutual» friendship, or to draw attention to the online advertisements placed log spammer. This type of spam is sometimes referred to as «Frendospamom» (from the English. Friend – a friend).

Spam Fighting Techniques To Protect Your Blog

STEP 2 – [Anti-Comment Spam Tactics]

What can you do to stop blog spamming? Below I have posted some methods that I have collected in the www. The layout is the following: first the description and second the links to the installation and documentation (always at the author´s website – no copyright problems right?). I have tried to organize them starting from the easiest, GOOD LUCK!

1.Comment Spam Quick Fix from Burningbird’s. Easy method to start stoping spam in your blog. You add a hidden field to all of your comment forms and then MT look for that information when it processes the comment form. This simple process will eliminate most of bots spam comments (the most dangerous).

You only need to modify the following MT templates:

Individual data entry
Comment Listing Template
Comment Preview Template
Comment Error Page

2.Comment Queue Script/MT Hack from ScriptyGoddess. This script put all comments into a pending status until you approve or disapprove them. This solution may cause your blog a lost of interaction but you can target comments suspicious of spam. Some people will find this difficult because you must modify your MT installation and also you must watch your comments.

You can login into the script, see all the “pending” comments. Review/Edit/Delete the ones you don’t want on your blog. This method is indicated for blog owners who want to have their blogs open for anyone/everyone to join in on, but don’t like the idea of forcing registration before allowing comments from visitors.

3.Jacob’s “Edit/Delete Comment” notification. This solution requires some knowledge in MT perl files but is not very difficult. Jacob has modified the mt-comments.pm file adding a code to the bottom of the comments notification email that includes the link to the “Edit/Delete Comment” screen. This way you can delete easily all spam comments, is not the final solution but is recommended for moderate spam blogs (less than 10 spam comments/day).

4.Captcha Turing test to eliminate spam from bots. James Seng has developed a MT version of a Captcha Turing Test. This solution add a graphical validation code to your comment post form. The author must type the exact code (numbers) shown in a graphic in order for the comment to be valid. This eliminate all of the comment spam from bots. This method is used for big companies like Overture or Yahoo and nowadays is well implemented in internet online forms. Recomemended for blogs receiving spamming from bots.

5.James Seng Bayesian Filter for MT. Another great solution from James Seng. This plugin will allow you to train your MT to identify spam comments and trackback pings using Bayesian filtering technique which is hugely successful in fighting Email spams. The bayesian algorithm has been modified here to carter for the special characteristic of comments and pings. The system started off dumb but as you train the system, it will become better in identify spam. Once it is sufficient trained, it will require no or little maintenance.

6.Jay Allen’s comment Spam Blacklist. This plugin check urls in your comment form and trackbacks, then search it in a blacklist of known spammers, if found it doesn´t allow the comment to be processed. The main advantage of this method is that targets the core content of comment spam (url) and not the IP address or other easily changeable information. It is just as easy for someone to change their IP address using a proxy, or simply use a dialup account and reconnect to get a new one. The comments blacklisted never show up in the site and you can use also retroactive blacklistings to remove existing comment spam. The main drawback is that it doesn´t prevent from submission, just the display.

Other quick tips for a spam-free blog are:

a) Rename your comment script.

b) Don’t link to the comment script on your front page.

c) Separate “Preview” and “Post” into two separate scripts

Finally, the most effcient way to stop comment spam is to stop comments itself at your blog, but in my opinion then it wouldn´t be a blog. I know some webmasters that have made this, I invite them to allow comments again and use one of the methods of this page, don´t let spammers close your blog!
